Interview with Winter Babe Samson
Profession: High School Senior.
Book: Wounded Love and Winter in Love
Phoenix- First off, I want to thank you for coming in to sit down with me. I’ve been waiting for this interview for a long time.
Winter-You’re are most welcome.
Phoenix-Well we all know that you are the daughter of Jyme Samson and Cricket Hooper. Your mother has been here a couple of times and we just adore her.
Winter-Yes, I was raised by my father.
Phoenix-Yes I am of that. And by the looks of you he did an amazing job. You have grown into a beautiful young woman. And I say a spitting image of your Mo-
Winter-Please don’t say my Mother.
Phoenix-Why not? That’s a huge compliment.
Winter-I am my own person and I look like me.
Phoenix-I certainly can respect that.
Winter-Thank You.
Winter then uncrosses and re-crosses her legs. A familiar image I remember seeing her Mother do a lot when I’d interviewed her. She seemed like a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders. It’s obvious that talking about Cricket would be an issue for her. I’d try not to do that anymore during this interview.
Phoenix-So Winter, please give us the day and the life of Winter Babe Samson?
Winter-It’s pretty boring to be honest with you. I just drop my little brothers off at their school, go to my school, hang out with my friends, and then I go home.
Phoenix-Okay tell me a little about your friends?
Winter-M two besties are Scarlett and Zillah. I’ve been knowing Scarlett the longest we went to grade school together. And then in middle school we met Zillah. We’ve amigos ever since.
Phoenix-That’s sweet. And boys?
Winter-No boyfriend.
Winter gives an uneasy smile and then she shifts in her seat. I can tell this subject makes her a little uneasy. So I will make this quick for her.
Phoenix-Okay, I only have a couple more quick questions about boys and then we’re done with that subject, okay?
She nodded back. Winter now had her fingers are twisted through each other, and her shoulders were raised a little. She was a nervous wreck and I had to make this quick.
Phoenix-Okay so tell me about Dakarai and Joaquin?
Winter-They’re best friends and we’re all seniors this year at Federal Way High.
Phoenix-How do you know them?
Winter-We’re all Res Mutts.
Phoenix-Res Mutts?
Winter-Mixed Race from the Reservation.
Phoenix-Oh, okay I get it.
I nodded back at her while I shifted through my papers searching for the name that had left my memory.
Phoenix-And what about Axle Albertson? Who is he?
Winter-A guy from school.
Phoenix-Not a friend?
Winter-No, well not really.
Phoenix-What do you mean?
Winter-We’ve hung out a few times but nothing more than that.
Phoenix-Well according to my paperwork. He’s the son of Elle Tomeo and Bert Albertson.
Winter-I guess so.
Phoenix-But wouldn’t Axle be considered a Res Mutt too? His mother is Native American and his father is Caucasian.
Winter-Yeah I guess so but he never hung out with us on the Res.
Phoenix-Why not? You guys are all about the same age and you guys are all seniors at FWH.
Winter-I don’t really know. I just remembered he was really pale, no brown pigments to his skin at all. I remember they use to call him the little pale man.
Phoenix-Oh.
Winter looked away from me then and eyed the door. I knew she was ready to end this interview.
Phoenix-So final question.
She sat up straight and waited for it.
Phoenix-Have you ever been in love?
Winter shook her head hard and frowned.
Winter-No.
Phoenix-No or Not yet?
Winter-I don’t know.
And that includes our interview with Winter Babe Samson. Next week we will be sitting down with Dakarai Venzor.
