Interview with Dakarai Venzor from The From Love to Loathe Series Book Three “Winter In Love”

Occupation: a senior at Federal Way High School.

Dakarai came in looking like he had just stepped out of Esquire Magazine. He wore black jeans, with black Chuck high tops, a grey cable sweater, and a black leather jacket. He so darn cute that I could barely stand it. When Dakarai smiled there was a 1000 watt beam coming from his million dollar smile. Dakarai reached over my desk and shook my hand. We both sat down and I got started.

Phoenix-Dakarai thank you so much for meeting with me this evening. I’ve been waiting patiently to meet with you.

Dakarai-Thank you for inviting me, I’m glad to be here.

Phoenix-So let’s get started. So is it true to say that you’re part of the popular group at school?

Dakarai-I don’t like groups, my friends and I hang out with a large crowd from school. But we’re not a gang or group.

Phoenix-Okay that’s fair. I’ve heard this phrase being used by a few of your classmates. A few of you call yourself “Mutts”

Dakarai-Yes we do refer to ourselves as Mutts. According to the words dictionary Mutts means a derogatory manner. But it’s the total opposite for us when we use it. Being a Mutt is cool, it means being mixed race and proud of it.

Phoenix-What are most of the mutts mixed with?

Dakarai-Well around here mostly Native, Black, and Mexican.

Phoenix-Oh and what are you mixed with?

Dakarai-I’m a Black Native.

Phoenix-And your best friend Joaquin, what is he mixed with?

Dakarai-He’s Mexi-Native.

Phoenix-And the beautiful Winter Samson, what is she?

A huge grin appeared on his face then. I knew Winter was the same as

Dakarai but this was the perfect moment to bring her up. I couldn’t resist it.

Dakarai-She’s Black native, the same as me.

Phoenix-So do you feel like you have more in common with Black Natives since you’re the same?

Dakarai-No, not at all. I can relate to almost anyone no matter the race.

Phoenix-So since brought up Miss, Winter, how is your relationship with her?

Dakarai-Correction you brought her up. But she’s a really cool girl.

Phoenix-Just cool? I have a quote here that you supposedly said about the infamous Winter Samson. The quote states-

He held up a hand and drops his head. He wore a big grin and I stopped in midsentence.

Dakarai-There’s no need to go into all of that. I told you she’s a cool girl and I respect her.

Phoenix-Well I dare not tease you after that. Okay so final question, why

does everyone tease Axle Albertson?

Dakarai-Who?

Phoenix-He’s one of your classmates.

Dakarai-I’ve never heard of him.

Phoenix-Apparently the kids used to call him the little white pale man.

Dakarai-Oh yea white Jamaican.

Phoenix-The white Jamaican?

Dakarai-Yea see he has these nasty dreads and he smells like shi-uhm, he smells. He works for his dad’s company and he just, he-just.

Phoenix-Why not embrace him? He’s a mutt too.

Dakarai-He’s a mutt?

Phoenix-Yes, his father is white and his mother is Native.

Dakarai-I didn’t know that, he’s so pale and dirty.

Phoenix-Well maybe now you guys have something to talk about since you have something in common.

Dakarai-I doubt it, that kid stinks, bad.

Phoenix-Give him a chance.

Dakarai-Yea.

I could tell in Dakarai’s undertone that this friendship would never happen. But I did try. Next week we will meet up with Axle Albertson. See you then.
